The fallacy of the "6% story" from the CDC.

Earlier this week, the CDC “quietly” announced that only 6% of COVID-19 deaths were from the virus alone. The remainder, the overwhelming 94%, were caused by a combination of factors, known as “co morbidities,” or “pre existing conditions.” Cause to celebrate? Pop open the bubbly, and drop the streamers and balloons from the sky? Rip off our masks and go back to sweating, spitting, and sneezing all over one another???!

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

The #1 problem with this study is that it told us what we already more or less knew. The virus is unquestionably deadly, as we approach 200,00 deaths in America alone this year. We also know that it attacks unhealthier populations with even more vigor. Obesity, cancer, high blood pressure, advanced age, weakened immune system, organ damage…..didn’t we know that already? Yes. We’ve known for some time.

So what do we make of this?

  • in a state like Louisiana, more than half of all residents likely have at least one pre-existing condition, or co morbidity.

  • people who are perfectly healthy are at much lower risk, they’re just very tough to find

  • social distancing, proper mask-wearing, and avoiding large crowds still seems to be the best way to live

Long story short: it’s much ado about nothing. Sorry, y’all.
